Fritz House

Historically used as workshop space and the residence of gestalt psychologist Fritz Perls, the renovation and interior design of the ‘Fritz House’ was to transition this defunct structure into one of the premier guest accommodations on the property.
Souls seek out Esalen to learn and to grow – the idea being not that they leave ‘complete’ or ‘fixed’, but more importantly that they have transformed in their ability to appreciate and embrace the imperfection and see the beauty in it.
The approach to the renovation and design of this semicircular structure was very much the same – a transformation that elevates yet appreciates and embraces the quirks and imperfections of the space as it was built, as part of its character and beauty.
The palette, inspired by the surrounding environment, is a true extension of the outside landscape - reflecting the beauty of the world that lies beyond the interior space.
The intent was to produce an atmospheric experience that allows for ultimate tranquility whilst in the space, free from distraction – giving anyone who stays there the opportunity for radical presence and contemplation while sitting at what feels like edge of the world.
